STUNNING BEAUTY, TRUE RARITY!
“Proofs of 1914 are very rare,” writes David Akers. “Of the 70 proofs struck, it is my estimate that only 20-25 can still be accounted for today.” John Dannreuther, however, estimates 35–40 examples survive.
Even though this coin is housed in an older NGC holder, it appears to be a “Fresh Coin” on the market. Extensive research has failed to locate a single auction or other sale of this coin in this specific NGC holder. According to NGC, this holder style was used from 1997 to 2000, indicating that the coin was certified during that period. It apparently then entered a collection, where it remained for more than 25 years until now.
This is a Superb Gem Proof, exhibiting razor-sharp definition throughout and beautiful surfaces with distinctive matte luster. The overall eye appeal is exceptional. Only nine examples have been graded PF66 by NGC, with seven finer, underscoring the rarity of this remarkable coin. Above all, it offers collectors the opportunity to acquire an exceptionally rare Matte Proof of Saint-Gaudens’ unquestioned masterpiece.
