While many U.S. coins are described and marketed as ārare,ā this issue, with an original mintage of 144, and surviving population of 70-90, is an actual rarity! Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth have estimated that the 1912 proof ranks fifth in scarcity among the Indian $5 proofs.
Its rarity is the foundation of long-term value. PCGS has graded 1 as PR65+ with 22 finer, while in CAC there are 2 in PF65/65+ with 6 finer.
