This coin is a Condition Rarity and Registry Set candidate par excellence.
“In 1886 the New Orleans Mint struck silver dollars exclusively,” writes Bowers, and “they did a sloppy job, spaced the dies too far apart, and turned out millions of poorly struck coins.” However, that is certainly not the case with this offering. It is breathtaking. Please take a careful look at the photos and you will see exactly what we mean.
The 1886-O is among the most challenging Morgan dollars to find with prooflike fields. PCGS reports a total of only 11 Prooflike pieces, along with 16 Deep Mirror Prooflike examples. The rarity of reflective examples is magnified by the elusiveness of this issue in higher grades. The 1886-O is virtually uncollectible at the Gem grade level.
This is a blast-white coin with reflective mirrored fields that contrast dramatically with the frosted devices. A few light marks are consistent with the MS64 grade. The green CAC sticker gives this well-struck beauty prestige.
