1879-CC $1 Capped Die,
PCGS MS64DMPL
Morgan Dollar Rare Coin
Certification: 97089.64/56830939
Mintage: 756,000
PCGS (DMPL) POP: 5/1
This is a Wow! coin beyond compare. The super-frosted devices with a deep mirrored finish in the fields gives this coin that classic black and white contrast when tilted in your hand. This piece is well struck with no distractions and is truly rare with a PCGS population of only 5 with a single piece finer (in MS64+DMPL with a price tag double of this offering!)
The "Capped Die" 1879-CC Dollar got its name from the crusted die rust that shows up as raised dimples around most of both letters of the famous “CC” mintmark. The Capped Die is also an over-mintmark variety, even though the rust hides most of the details. Many collectors want to acquire specimens of both the normal (or "clear") mintmark and the Capped Die mintmark. Therefore, considerable demand exists for a date that is scarce in the first place.
Ron Guth writes, “Of the two varieties, the Clear Mintmark is the more common of the two varieties by almost double. The Capped Die Dollar is very scarce as a Prooflike and downright rare as a Deep Mirror Prooflike.”
