CONDITION RARITY!
Carson City Mint specialist Randy Goe writes in The Confident Carson City Coin Collector that less than 2% of the reported mintage exists today.
Both sides of this truly rare—and very desirable—Mint State example exhibit remarkably few surface abrasions. This coin is satiny in texture with overall sharp definition. The 1874-CC is a very popular issue in all grades—and collectors can expect to locate a circulated piece up to the AU58 grade without much difficulty. However, only an intrepid collector can locate an uncirculated 1874-CC twenty. The NGC population is 8 in MS61 with a mere 1 (MS62) finer.
Most 1874-CC double eagles circulated locally, which explains its extreme rarity in Mint State. During that time, there was little numismatic interest in the Old West, and few coins were saved in Mint State in foreign bank hoards. Therefore, this is among the finest known to the major grading services, a coin that would serve as an exciting centerpiece of an advanced collection of Carson City Mint coinage.
