“This is the rarest and most famous eagle from the Carson City mint,” writes Doug Winter.
NGC Coin Explorer: “This issue... surpasses the celebrated 1870-CC double eagle for top rarity honors among all CC-mint gold coins.”
Few American gold coins combine such rarity, history, and legendary status. To appreciate the absolute rarity of the 1870-CC $10 Liberty Head—with a tiny survival of just 45-60 pieces—look at the numbers behind famous 'rarities' such as the 1893-S Morgan dollar (100,000) and the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter (52,000). The 1870-CC eagle exists in an entirely different world of numismatic rarity.
The surviving evidence suggests that most, if not all, of the 1870-CC eagles entered local circulation, which explains why none exist today in Mint State. During that time, there was little numismatic interest in the Old West, and few coins were taken out of circulation during the 1870s and 1880s. Take a look at the images. This is an original coin that saw its share of honest circulation around the Comstock Lode and Virginia City.
