Rare and Desirable Type One Liberty Head Double Eagle
Here is a coin that stands among the leading rarities in the Liberty Head double eagle series. Therefore, this is a listing to which the gold specialist should pay very special attention. An estimated mintage of 120,000 double eagles was produced without the required Motto, ‘In God We Trust.’ Then an unknown number of those twenties were placed into circulation before the new ‘Motto’ dies arrived in March 1866. However, at that point, it is quite possible that any ‘No Motto’ double eagles left on hand at the San Francisco Mint were melted.
Doug Winter writes, “Today [the 1866-S No Motto] is recognized as one of the rarer Type One issues. It is in demand both among specialists and more general collectors who appreciate its status as a Transitional issue.”
