Famous Proof-only issue struck for William IV's Coronation Proof set of 1831
With a scant mintage of 100, this is an extremely rare favorite of British collectors that seldom comes to auction or market. NGC has graded 4 as PF65 CAM, with a single piece finer. This coin displays delightful cabinet iridescence that decorates brilliant original fields. In British numismatics this coin would be called a choice Fleur de Coin (“flower of the die”), meaning that it is in virtually perfect, pristine condition. Its rarity and popularity translate to a coin that will always be in demand, one that would therefore be an excellent investment tool.
It is probable that Coronation sets were presented to dignitaries in London. This absolutely stunning Crown was produced for the Coronation of King William IV of Great Britain. The obverse was engraved by William Wyon, Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint, while the reverse was engraved by Jean Baptiste Merlen. William’s Coronation took place on September 8, 1831, at the age of 64. He was uncle to Victoria, whose iconic and lengthy reign followed his short seven-year rule.
