1810 $5 Capped Bust Half Eagle
Large Date Large 5 PCGS MS62
Certification: 8108.62/37541380
The 1810 Capped Bust Half Eagle belongs to the Type 1, Large Bust design used in the earliest years of this series, before the portrait was later reduced in scale. Within the 1810 date, this example carries the Large Date, Large 5 designation, by far the most obtainable of the four numeral combinations struck that year, making it an accessible entry point into early United States gold.
John Reich designed the Capped Bust Half Eagle in 1807, replacing the earlier Draped Bust type with a bolder, more substantial portrait of Liberty. The obverse shows Liberty facing left in a soft turban style cap, surrounded by thirteen stars for the original states. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast, holding arrows and an olive branch beneath the denomination.
Early United States gold coins like this half eagle were struck in limited numbers and saw heavy melting in later decades, both for bullion value and during periods of gold recoinage. Surviving examples in true Mint State remain scarce for the type overall, which keeps steady demand from collectors building an early gold type set or a full date run of Capped Bust Half Eagles.
Certified PCGS MS62, this coin shows clean, lustrous surfaces with the light handling marks typical of the grade and strong eye appeal for a coin struck over two centuries ago.
