Its rarity is due to Alexander Hamilton’s erroneous gold to silver ratio of 1:15. He undervalued gold and the vast majority of gold coins—especially $5 half eagles—were exported to Europe up until 1834.
The thick, beautiful luster on this piece appears as if it were just struck at the Old Philadelphia Mint. Both sides have a slight tinge of reddish toning, which is an indication of both originality and careful preservation over the centuries. An expert strike resulted in all features being completely rendered. Honestly, this coin is breathtaking!
