The 1804 eagle is a major rarity and stands among the most desirable dates in the series. David Akers writes, “The 1804 is one of the rarer early Eagles, far more rare than such dates as 1795, 1797 Heraldic Eagle, 1799, 1801 or 1803 and also more rare than the underrated 1800.”

The reported mintage of 3,757 may overstate the actual amount of 1804-dated Eagles struck. John Dannreuther estimates a mintage of between 2,500 and 3,757 coins. Heritage specialists note, “An unusual percentage of 1804 Crosslet 4 eagles are known in cleaned or damaged states.”

According to PCGS, this issue in AU58 has only made twelve auction appearances over the course of thirty-one years (1995 to 2026). The rarity of gold eagles was evident as early as 1798, when it was reported in Congress that a large quantity of $10 eagles were spotted in a goldsmith’s shop window in England. Alexander Hamilton’s 15:1 silver-to-gold ratio left gold coins (1795–1834) undervalued, encouraging them to be hoarded or sent to Europe, where they were melted and sold for their bullion value.
