EXCEPTIONAL RARITY
David Akers writes, “This is the last issue of this short-lived Small Eagle type and it is decidedly the rarest of the three.”
The reported mintage of 3,615 may overstate the actual number of 1797-dated Small Eagle eagles produced. John Dannreuther estimates a mintage of between 1,250 and 3,615 coins dated 1797 that carry the Small Eagle design. PCGS founder David Hall was fond of saying that the Small Eagle $10 gold pieces were the “beachfront property” of numismatics. Of the 50-60 surviving examples known today, NGC has graded 6 as AU58 with only 8 finer.
Provenance: “The Charles Kramer Collection,” Stack’s and Superior, November 1988, Lot 533; Superior Galleries, January 1996, Lot 155; “The Dr. James A. Ferrendelli Collection,” Stack’s Bowers, August 2014, Lot 11104.
