DESIRABLE, ICONIC FIRST YEAR ISSUE
The 1795 $5 is a desirable issue that will always be sought by early gold specialists and type collectors. As the first $5 gold piece struck by the United States Mint, it is historically significant and a true demand rarity. PCGS has graded 58 pieces as AU58 with 91 finer. The reported population may overstate the number of individual coins known, because of possible resubmissions.
Please take a look at the photos. It is sharply struck and retains nearly full original luster. This coin displays subtle semi-reflectivity throughout the fields. Attractive and without distractions, this coin has the look of a Mint State example due to its exceptionally sharp details on both the obverse and reverse.
The iconic designs by Robert Scot have an attractive Americana folk art appearance. Art historian Cornelius Vermeule writes, “Robert Scot's first gold coinage has a positive character of its own, a healthy individuality and almost rustic charm that conveys the message of a young nation seeking its identity as well as any monumental manifestation of the early arts in America."
