Greatest Rarity Among 1795 $5 Varieties!
This piece is arguably one of the greatest rarities of early American gold coinage. The 1795 $5 is historically significant as the first ever gold issue produced by the U.S. Mint, and with nine (yes, nine!) documented survivors in the BD-7 variety, it appears to be the rarest of all twelve of the 1795 $5 varieties. The only other MS61 piece of the BD-7 was in the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, which sold via Heritage on May 4, 2023 for $132,000.00. The sole finer piece (of BD-7) is graded NGC MS62 CAC, and sold in October 2011 at Heritage for $92,000.00.
John Dannreuther estimated that 300-600 of the BD-7 were struck in 1795. Of those, he estimated that there were 12 surviving examples of the BD-7 variety. However, Heritage Auctions, in the May 4, 2023, auction listing for the Bass coin, provided documentation of eight surviving specimens of BD-7. This offering from Tangible Investments, nonetheless, is not among those eight, currently giving us nine surviving BD-7 pieces.
