FAMED COLLABORATION OF NEWTON AND CROCKER
DECIMO TERTIO edge. Plain Scepters variety in the "Fine Work” style. Impressive representative of this charming and rarely-encountered type, which is immensely popular for its distinctively refined bust style of the king. The mintage is unknown, however 256 specimens of the 1701 issue were recorded in commerce during a 45-year period.
This true classic of British numismatics was engraved by John Croker, German master jeweler who migrated to England, where he became a medalist and formed a successful collaboration with Sir Isaac Newton, Master of the Royal Mint. Newton hired Croker specifically to produce more lifelike and detailed portraits. The scientist sought to reform the Mint’s reputation for incompetence by employing his scientific approach to craft coins with groundbreaking eye-appeal and technical precision. Newton harnessed new minting technology to achieve the finest possible quality for British coinage.
